Toyosu Tuna Market Update
For fish over 40kg, the average transaction price of fresh bluefin tuna reached ¥4,410/kg, up 25% from the previous week, indicating that supply structure adjustments are supporting prices.
Reportedly, the Japanese purse seine fishing area has gradually shifted from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Japan, changing market arrivals and pushing the overall average price upward. However, with summer approaching, the fat content of bluefin tuna is declining, and high-end product prices continue to show seasonal correction.
Data show that high-end bluefin tuna prices have fallen from ¥11,000/kg to ¥10,000/kg, while low-end products have eased from ¥2,100/kg to ¥1,900/kg. Industry insiders believe the high-end market may remain under seasonal pressure for a while.
At the same time, the Australian southern bluefin tuna market is weak. Last Friday, 96 southern bluefin tuna entered the market, but 77 failed to transact, reflecting cautious end-user demand.
Notably, the frozen bigeye tuna market remains strong. The Tokyo market average for frozen bigeye tuna holds at ¥1,612/kg, staying at historic highs. Tight global high-quality supply and recovering restaurant demand continue to support bigeye tuna prices in the short term.
Market outlook
The international tuna market currently shows a “bluefin divergence, strong bigeye” pattern. On one hand, bluefin tuna is affected by seasonal factors and high-end prices are under pressure; on the other hand, bigeye tuna remains firm thanks to stable demand and limited supply.
For domestic importers, distributors and restaurant operators, it is recommended to closely monitor Japanese market price movements and global catch dynamics, plan procurement rhythm carefully, and reduce operating risks from market volatility.
