Antibiotics in Seafood Farming
Stopping fish farmers from using antibiotics as a preventive measure helps curb the spread of antibiotic resistance — one of the greatest risks to human health.
One practice ASC does not allow is the misuse of antibiotics. Banning the preventive use of antibiotics helps curb the spread of antibiotic resistance, which has been identified as one of the biggest health challenges of the 21st century. Across many areas of agriculture, antibiotics are sometimes misused to prevent disease before it occurs or to promote growth — just as humans sometimes misuse them. But the more antibiotics are used, the more likely bacteria are to develop resistance, which means antibiotics should only be used when absolutely necessary. This ASC ban also encourages farmers to adopt more responsible methods of disease prevention and fish health management.
ASC standards require fish farmers to restrict antibiotic use and monitor water quality and fish health. ASC-certified shrimp farmers may not use any antibiotics on shrimp carrying the ASC label. Antibiotics/medications may only be used on an ASC-certified farm after a qualified veterinarian or fish health professional has diagnosed a disease, and only with legally authorized drugs.
In addition to these rules, certain antibiotics may never be used on any ASC-certified farm. These are antibiotics classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “critically important” for human medicine. The WHO has determined that these antibiotics are essential for treating humans, so overuse must be avoided to prevent the risk of bacteria becoming resistant. This is why ASC-certified farms are never permitted to use such treatments under any circumstances.
ASC-certified farms must also implement a more comprehensive health plan for their farmed fish, covering biodiversity beneath the farm, the survival and health of farmed fish, water filtration, and the source and condition of fingerlings. By taking this holistic approach to fish health, farms can reduce their reliance on antibiotics.
Reward responsible farmers — look for the logo!
If, like us, you only want to buy and eat seafood raised by farmers who use medication responsibly, simply look for the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) logo when shopping or dining out. If you don’t see it — ask why.
